An defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible security risks posed by Chinese cars, while personnel have been advised to avoid discussing secret matters in any cars.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss classified material while travelling in China-made cars.
The minister explained that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that security is a issue in every contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This wider defence environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and caution in every aspects of official activities, from transport usage to communication habits.
