Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
